Can Anyone Outside The Top Two Seeds Win In Paris?

May 25, 2014

The 2014 French Open is about to begin at Roland Garros in Paris and the question most tennis fans will be wanting answered is, can anyone other than the top two seeds in the men’s and women’s draw win the title on the Parisian clay? Rafael Nadal (No.1 seed) and Novak Djokovic (No.2 seed) are the talk of the men’s draw with the majority of tennis pundits predicting a final showdown between the two best players in the world on the last Sunday of the tournament, similarly the same could be said on the women’s side of things with Serena Williams (No.1 seed) and Li Na (No.2 seed) favoured to go deep into the tournament also.

Eight-time champion Nadal is still the favourite in most people’s mind with the King of Clay shooting for an amazing ninth title in Paris while Djokovic’s recent victory over the Spaniard in Rome has many predicting that the Serb is ready to join the career Grand Slam club in 2014, Serena is a raging hot favourite on the women’s side but the American is sometimes prone to injury and if she is unfortunate enough to falter because of that then the tournament could become wide open, Li Na is the only Grand Slam winner this season on the women’s side and the world No.2 can also boast a former French Open title to her credit as well.

So who are the likely contenders who can stop the top two seeds from taking all the spoils in Paris again this year, Stan Wawrinka, Roger Federer, David Ferrer or Tomas Berdych perhaps in the men’s, or can one of the new breed of Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori or Grigor Dimitrov make a run at the title, in the women’s there is Aggie Radwanska, Jelena Jankovic, Maria Sharapova and Dominika Cibulkova perhaps, or can the younger brigade of Simona Halep, Sloane Stephens or Eugenie Bouchard make a charge for the title instead.

Well, I have asked the question and in two weeks time we will all know the answers, I think for sure someone can knock off the respective top two seeds but I guess the even bigger question is will they? My answer would be….probably not, I’m picking it will either be Rafa or Novak who lift the Musketeers Trophy and either Serena or Madame Li who hoist the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen silverware at the end of the tournament, what do you all think GSFT fans, can, or should I say will, anyone outside the top two seeds in Paris win the French Open in 2014?

I definitely think that someone outside the #1 & #2 will win the Ladies’ tournament. Could be Halep, Aggie, Jankovic, Ivanovic, Kvitova.. or even Cibulkova if she is on fire like at the Australian Open.

On the men’s side, I find it very difficult to bet against a Rafa-Novak final. Roger can definitely upset Novak as he knows exactly how to beat him. The question is : will he succeed?

Now that both Stan and Li are out of the tournament, as well as Kei and Dimitrov, we can expect a lot of surprising runs into the second week!

Yep, plenty of big surprises early in Paris this year alright, it might turn out to be like Wimbledon last year perhaps Adunar, Stan was a major contender here but couldn’t handle the jandal this time around, Madame Li looked nervous in her loss too, it will be a HUGE boilover if Rafa and/or Serena now lose before the quarter-finals.

If Serena makes the final she will take a world of beating for sure, but if she doesn’t then Halep or Aggie have the best shot I reckon, although if Sharapova can somehow get past Serena then she might take it again too, I don’t see JJ, Ana or Petra winning the French this time around but who knows the way this thing is going, heck maybe even Genie Bouchard has a decent shot.

Anything other than a Rafa v Novak finale will be a surprise in the men’s championship, Nadal has a VERY soft draw until the quarters now so he should be firing in the second week, not sure Ferrer or Andy can beat him over five sets on clay, Roger could definitely beat Novak if they end up clashing but I think this is Nole’s time.

Well, it turns out that there was two women who could beat Serena and Li Na after all, but most people wouldn’t have guessed that it would be Garbine Muguruza and Kristina Mladenovic though.

Can we now expect normal service to resume in the men’s draw though with Rafa and Novak making the final?
