Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

I can't remember the last time there was such variation amongst the men's Unseeded.

-Arvis

Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

I totally agree Arvis, in fact this tourney has set a record for the number of differences in our unseeded picks....14 different picks in the men and 11 in the women, given that there is only 19 of us competing in the RG Yoda Cup that is pretty amazing really.

On another controversial note, anyone think Rafa was juicing when BHP's pic was taken?....or was he just a muscly flexible gym junkie? wink

Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

Nadal's  body in that picture looks similar to a character from a comic, I want to say one of the Fantastic Four.

Okay, so I looked, the Thing.

Thanks once again for the team picks differences, Arnaud!

Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

VERY nice job Arnaud putting that all together, just 1 small problem..... My name isn't OZ tongue

Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

Little-known fact: The Thing, upon retiring from the Fantastic Four, opened up a shop where he made and repaired shoes.  The store slogan? "It's Cobblerin' Time!"

God, that never fails to make me laugh.

Anyways, tennis.

Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

I actually wish that statistics like this would be available for the larger fantasy tennis game on this website. There's got to be a way to create a program that calculates how many times a particular tennis player is picked on a particular team (that way it wouldn't have to be manually entered). This would be a great feature for the website as it would allow fantasy players to more conveniently see the spread of picks, and to know which upsets would best improve their chances!! I'm no computer programmer, but there's got to be a way. Adding features like this could also attract new fantasy tennis players!!

Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

Great suggestion, Cam.  You should pass the suggestion along to Charles, our intrepid site administrator.  I suggest emailing him.  It seems to work best.

Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

I disagree with that suggestion and hope that Charles would not add that option. I also think that someone raised that question on the forum few years ago and I was also against it.

The only way that I would accept that option is if it would be possible after the deadline for making teams. Otherwise it would give the possibility for people who are unsure about some picks ( and almost always are some tricky ones ) to create their teams by following the high percentage picks, so I really think that it would be a bad addition.

Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

We'll have all this cool shit on our website one day.

16 Wimby 14 US Open Yoda Cup
16 Wimby 14 RG Alpha Cup
12, 13 & 16 King Droid
15 Naboo Cup 14 Lord Vader- RU

Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

That's a good point, Dragan. I wouldn't want people to be cheating by looking at popular picks. But I think there must be a way of conveniently revealing picks after play has officially begun and it is no longer possible to edit teams.

Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

I've created a spreadsheet to track performance in alpha cup, beta bowl, and yoda here
It shows all picks, and running scores.

One of the calculations I did shows uniqueness vs common wisdom of each team.  This is based on how many of your picks are shared with other players.  So if everyone chose the same players then all the teams would have a score of 16 (8 men, 8 women on our teams).  If someone chose a completely unique team (no picks shared with others in the league) then the score would be 1.  So the range is 16 - 1.  A higher score indicates more "shared wisdom", a lower score indicates more "uniqueness"... but which is better?

Here are the tallies for Yoda league (they are on line 145 of the spreadsheet (yoda tab), links above):

11.1 - dragan
10.7 - charles, thexc, tono
10.5 - bhp
10.3 - adunar
10.1 - tenniselbow
9.9 - edu, mike
9.8 - snolly, dwight
9.6 - arvis
9.4 - lucky loser
9.3 - jolivegarden
9.2 - johnny
9.1 - originalzygote
8.7 - don
8.3 - wimbledonut
7.8 - crosscourt

The scores for alpha cup and beta bowl combined (the brother leagues) are on the alpha tab in row 167.
In general, the alpha group shows less originality than the beta bowl, and yoda falls in between.

I'll be updating the spreadsheet from time to time, so save the link or check back here as desired...

Re: Yoda Cup - 2014 Roland Garros

Thank you both for the great stats!

I'd say the higher the index is, the more "probable" your picks are. But for a BIG win, you sometimes need 1 or 2 picks out of the box

It's interesting that Dragan is at one extreme with the highest commonality, and Wimbledonut is at the opposite end with high uniqueness...  So far both strategies are successful... will be interesting to see how it plays out... smile
