Re: Tennis Draw Challenge 2019 - Results & Discussion

ATP

Rotterdam
Our ATP 500 bracket campaign isn't exactly off to a rousing start!  Dtrain won this with only 30 points.  Lame.  That's still almost double last place BHP, who only got 17.  Nobody correctly predicted either finalist.  Come on, guys!

Buenos Aires
Arvis correctly predicted Cecchinato to make the finals here, a prediction which got him the bracket win 33 points, just 1 above Edu in 2nd.  Tenedab brought up the rear here, but still scored 20, which is at least respectable, so we all had decent finishes here.

New York
For our maiden New York campaign, only HTS and Johnny had Opelka as far as the semis at least, so they had the high scores, with HTS winning at a total of 24 points.  Murree was hit hard by this unpredictable "Challenger-like" tourney and finished with only 10.  Ouch.

ATP 250 Standings
1. TE: 248
2. Tono: -3 ↑5
3. Edu: -13 NEW
4. Arvis: -17 ↑7 ↓1 rank
5T. Drivers: -20 ↑4 ↓1 rank
5T. HTS: -20 NEW
Tenedab knocked off

HTS's win in New York gets him into the Top 5!  Edu finished 2nd in BA and 3rd in NY to leap into 3rd overall!  Nicely done, gents.

ATP 500 Standings
1. Dtrain: 30
2. Tenedab: -2
3T. Dwight: -3
3T. Edu: -3
5T. Murree: -4
5T. Spotec: -4

Our Top 5 here is a Top 6 for now, but this is already changing with the Rio results.  With how low scoring BA was, it's no surprise to see such small margins in these standings.

ATP Overall Standings
1T. TE: 506
1T. Tono: 506 ↑1 rank
3. Murree: -11 ↓1 rank
4. Edu: -12 ↑20
5T. Tenedab: -37 ↑2
5T. Dwight: -37 NEW

Wow.  Lots of shuffling here.  TE was doing so well, but couldn't hold his lead.  Mega props to Edu for gaining a whopping 20 points in one week (plus a couple days, lol) on the leader and yet still not changing ranks.  Who will win this tug of war between TE and Tono?

WTA

Doha
For a 470, there wasn't too much difference between first and last here.  Adunar and Edu shared the win at 38 points, only 13 above last place Johnny.  Obviously nobody expected Mertens to win this!

Poor HTS had just gotten in the Top 5 here!  Honestly, though, as of now it's all irrelevant.  Nobody is anywhere near TE.

We're all kind of struggling to maneuver through TE's dust trail here.  Props to Adunar for leaping into the Top 5!

BHP, Tenedab, and Snolly all had Goffin as SFist and Tsitsipas as finalist, which got them enough points for the three to share the win here.  That's yet another 13 point margin over last place, which is around what we usually get in 250s.  It was Dtrain who brought up the rear here, with him and Murree having no correct SFists.

Delray Beach
Another tournament where most of us struggled to make anything of note happen, and yet our winner Johnny managed to get 3 correct SFists!  Well done, Johnny!  That got him a final score of 28, 3 above second place Dwight and 11 more than last place, shared by Aiur and Arvis.

Even though nobody correctly predicted Bencic to win, we still had some impressive scores here, with Adunar taking the title with a very fine total of 73!  That's a 27 point gap over last place spotec, but only 1 point over second place TE and Tenedab.  As this is our first WTA 1000/900, those three will lead the Top 5 in that category for a while!

Budapest
And as if his Dubai win wasn't enough, Adunar also won this one too!  Somehow, in a major dartboard tournament, he, as well as HTS and Edu, managed to correctly predict AVU as winner here and gain a huge amount of points!  Adunar finished with 41, which is a staggering and mindblowing victory margin of 41 over last place Arvis, who scored a total of no points at all because he is an idiot!  A season-ending result for Arvis if there ever was one and it came in a lowly 280.  Great, GREAT result for Adunar, though, who has to be flying high after these WTA results last week.

Re: Tennis Draw Challenge 2019 - Results & Discussion

ATP

Two 500 brackets in the same week!  A rare occurrence and should give us a nice shakeup to the 500 Rankings.

Dubai
Everybody and their mothers picked Feddy to win this and win it he did, which means most of us were within just a few points of each other.  Only Spotec and Aiur backed different winners and, of course, finished in the last two spots.  However, Drivers finished in the top spot with 48 points, thanks to her continued support of Monfils.  That's a good 25 points over last place Aiur, but only 10 above the 11th place spot.

Acapulco
Not a dang one of us picked Nick The Lord to win here, so the scoring margins are similar to Dubai, since once again nobody really stood out much from the rest of us.  HTS and BHP were the only ones to get three SFists correct, finishing in the top two spots.  HTS got the win with 46 and BHP was 1 point behind him.  Great job, guys!  Getting three SFists is a tough ask in any tournament.
Meanwhile, Spotec got no SFists at all and finished in last place but still managed 29, which is higher than you would expect for a last place/no SFists bracket.

Sao Paulo
This one doesn't matter as much because it's just a 250, right?  WRONG, says Tenedab, who still broke 30 points here and even correctly predicted Casper Ruud to the SFs out of nowhere!  Five other Jedi had Pella winning, as well, and they all finished in the top here.  Last place here went to Snolly, who got.... 6.  Six whole points.  How is that possible?  He was actually one match away from achieving the rare Red Quarter in the bottom half.

ATP 250 Standings
1. TE: 298
2T. Tono: -16 ↓9
2T. Edu: -16 ↑3 ↑1 rank
4. Tenedab: -21 NEW
5. Drivers: -27 ↓5 ↓1 rank
-- Arvis eliminated --

Tenedab's big score in Sau Paulo gets him on the board here!  TE once again does enough to keep a comfortable lead, but Edu seems to want to threaten now as Tono starts to show signs of vulnerability.

ATP 500 Standings
1. Dtrain: 125
2. Drivers: -2 NEW
3. Dwight: -5 ↑5 ↑1 rank
4. Tenedab: -7 ↓3
5. Edu: -8 BOUNCE BACK
-- Johnny, Tono eliminated --

Dtrain didn't have to do too much to keep his #1 spot here, since we had small margins in both 500s.  However, Drivers' scores were enough to launch her within 3 points of taking the lead!  Wow!  She wasn't even the Top 5 before last week.  Edu also immediately recovered to get back in the standings here, great job from him.

ATP Overall Standings
1. TE: 640
2. Edu: -15 ↑4  ↑1 rank
3. Tono: -19 ↓16  ↓1 rank
4. Tenedab: -29 ↑1  ↑1 rank
5. Murree: -30 ↓9  ↓1 rank

Tono and Murree have really fallen off in a big way here.  Tono was tied for the lead just a couple weeks ago.  TE has it much easier for a while now!

---

WTA

Acapulco
Obviously nobody picked Yafan Wang to win this, so her big breakout means smaller margins of victory here.  The Top 5 here, though, all had Kenin in the finals, with Spotec poised to get the win if Kenin had won it all.  But with Wang's victory, BHP held on to the top score here with 32 points, beating 2nd place Tenny by 1 and last place Murree by 15.

WTA 280 Standings
1T. Adunar: 148
1T. Spotec: 148 ↑9  ↑1 rank
3. TE: -4 ↑6
4. Tenedab: -6 ↑10  ↑1 rank
5. Edu: -13 ↓2  ↓1 rank

Our leader Adunar didn't perform that well in Acapulco, but he DID do just enough to hold off the field, keeping level with hard-charging Spotec!  Yafan Wang's breakout was Adunar's salvation.  Which of these two Jedi will take #1 for themselves?  Or will TE or Tenedab gain still more success?  With the IW/Miami double coming up, it's going to be a while before we find out!

Overall Women's Standings
1. TE: 538
2. Adunar: -26 ↓6
3. Drivers: -38 ↑1  ↑1 rank
4. Edu: -42 ↓8  ↓1 rank
5. Tenedab: -43 ↑4

Once again, TE is sitting pretty on the Throne of Ease.  It looked like Adunar might jostle him a bit, but now 26 points is a lot to try and overcome any time soon.  Still, we have two huge tournaments coming up in the month of March.  Who will capitalize during the Sunshine Swing?

Re: Tennis Draw Challenge 2019 - Results & Discussion

Re: Tennis Draw Challenge 2019 - Results & Discussion

ATP

The R2D2 Crown competition starts now!

Indian Wells
Everyone picked Novak to win and he lost right away, so point totals here were all under 100.  That said, Tenedab still got the win with a total of 99!  While that isn't too far ahead of the rest of the field, it's a huge amount ahead of our last place finisher, who was WAY behind the rest of the field.  I speak, of course, of poor Spotec, who finished 31 points behind Ol' Tenny and 11 points behind the next lowest, HTS.
Tenedab beat 2nd place Tono by 5 and starts the R2D2 competition in a strong position.

ATP 1000 Standings
1. Tenedab: 99
2. Tono: -5
3. BHP: -6
4T. Snolly: -10
4T. TE: -10

These standings are unlikely to stick even for the rest of the month, as we have Miami starting in less than a day.  But since he needs to be in every Top 5 list anywhere ever, TE squeaks into the Top 5 here to start his R2D2 campaign.

ATP Overall Standings
1. TE: 729
2. Tono: -14 ↑5  ↑1 rank
3T. Edu: -19 ↓4  ↓1 rank
3T. Tenedab: -19 ↑10  ↑1 rank
5. Murree: -31 ↓1

Not too much happening here since all the scores from Indian Wells were pretty close.  Tenny moves into a tie for 3rd thanks to his great win.

WTA

Indian Wells
Yet another Winner nobody expected, just like on the men's side, scores are even lower here (as usual) than with the men's brackets.
Tono landed second place on the back of a sneaky Raonic pick in the men's, but here he did one better, getting the win thanks to a sneaky Kerber pick.  Fantastic instincts, Tono!  Thanks to Kerber making the final, Tono finished with 89 points, 7 over 2nd-place Spotec and 31 above last place Snolly.  Arvis rounds out the 80+ Club here in 3rd place.
There was a pretty decent bit of margin in the scores here, so let's see if anything happened to our 1000 and Overall Top 5 standings.

WTA 1000/900 Standings
1. Tono: 152 NEW
2. Adunar: -1 ↓2  ↓1 rank
3. Arvis: -3 ↑1  ↑1 rank
4. Tenedab: -10 ↓9  ↓2 ranks
5. TE: -18 ↓17  ↓3 ranks
-- Dtrain eliminated ---

Whoa.  Talk about slim margins.  3 points separates the top 3 here.  Congrats to Tono for leaping into the top spot out of nowhere!  Can he defend that effort in Miami?

Overall Women's Standings
1. TE: 600
2. Adunar: -10 ↑16
3T. Drivers: -30 ↑8
3T. Tono: -30 NEW
5. Tenedab: -35 ↑8
-- Edu eliminated --

TE is still in a nice, cushy position here, but if everyone gains on him in Miami like they did here, that won't last long.  Even Edu, who fell off the board, gained ground on TE.  TE finished 3rd from the bottom in IW.  He can't let that happen again in this coming tournament.

Only one person correctly predicted Federer to win this tournament, and that person was HTS!  So obviously, he won the... wait a minute...  he still came in 2nd to Murree by 7 points???  That's right, Murree's bracket here was so good, he still won pretty easily, with a grand total of 96.  BHP brought up the rear here with only 51, a huge fall off from his 3rd place finish in IW.  Looks like our ATP 1000 standings will be shaken up quite a bit.  Let's see how they look!

Soooo... after two Masters tourneys, there's Murree, and then there's a bunch of also-rans.  In fact, the 15 point difference here between #1 Murree and #2 Snolly/Arvis is the exact same as the point difference between Snolly/Arvis and 11th-place Johnny.  That's ridiculously huge.
Tenedab, who won Indian Wells, finished 13th here with only 60 points and has dropped all the way to 9th in the rankings.

ATP Overall Standings
1. Murree: 794 ↑45  ↑4 ranks
2. TE: -6 ↓20  ↓1 rank
3. Tono: -8 ↑6  ↓1 rank
4. Edu: -11 ↑7
5. Tenedab: -24 ↓5  ↓2 ranks

That was just ridiculous.  Murree, amazing job!
So dominant was Murree's performance compared to the rest of the Overall Top 5, that ((ERRORS REDACTED)).  Total madness!  How will the clay court season change things for the Jedi Masters?

Just like on the men's side, only one Jedi correctly predicted the winner here, but this time it (barely) resulted in a first place finish.  Arvis was the only one to back Barty to win her first 900/1000 title and she obliged him in impressive fashion!  Arvis had a similar surprise pick with Bertens back in 2018 Cincy, but his other results that year weren't great.  This year Arvis is actually performing surprisingly well.  Can he keep this up for the rest of 2019?  ...probably not.

WTA 1000/900 Standings
1. Arvis: 251 ↑30  ↑2 ranks
2. Tenedab: -27 ↓17  ↑2 ranks
3T. Adunar: -32 ↓31  ↓1 rank
3T. Edu: -32 NEW
5. Tono: -39 ↓40  ↓4 ranks
-- TE eliminated ---

Good grief!  This competition went from the slimmest of margins to a massive jump between first place and the rest of the field!  There will be plenty of chances for Arvis to screw thi- er, I mean for the rest of the Jedi Masters to close the gap during the clay season, though!  With Arvis doing so well here, how do our Overall WTA standings look?  TE has been leading for weeks, let's see if he still is...

WTA Overall Standings
1. TE: 662
2. Adunar: -4 ↑6
3. Edu: -10 BOUNCE BACK
4. Tenedab: -15 ↑20  ↑1 rank
5. Arvis: -17 NEW
-- Drivers, Tono eliminated --

And there he is, folks!  Despite the very "Novakian" Sunshine Swing TE had here, his lead was SO HUGE that it didn't matter.  He's still #1.  His miserable Miami should have cost him the top spot here, but Adunar also underperformed and wasn't able to gain the full 11 points he needed to take the lead.  But this will certainly make Charleston and Monterrey far more interesting than we may have expected back when March began!
Arvis, for his part, will enjoy his 1 week in the Top 5 before someone knocks him back off the leaderboard.

Re: Tennis Draw Challenge 2019 - Results & Discussion

Nicely done Murree!

Glad to see the back of the sunshine double. I'm only happy when it rains.
