Re: 2018 Aussie Open

IDK what has sold you on Thiem's game. I see a ton of talent being wasted because a guy isn't willing to vary up his game. I have a pretty vivid memory of his match with Goffin at the Aussie Open last year. He came out on fire, cooled off but still managed to win the first set. Goffin upped his level and won a tight second set, and Thiem faded away like a Challenger level player against Federer in 2006. He was destroyed at the French by Nadal. At the US Open, he was dismantling Delpo and then embarrassingly lost the next three sets. His win % is the worst of anyone in the top 11 of the rankings. Zverev has more upside IMO.

BTW, I didn't say Nadal would win even one more French Open. That all depends on his health going into the tournament. If he's out because of an injury, though, Thiem certainly doesn't become the favorite. Djokovic, Wawrinka, Federer and Murray would all be favored ahead of Thiem. I'd pick Delpo to go further than Thiem if both guys were 100%, without seeing the draw.

Re: 2018 Aussie Open

Thiem is a good example of the modern pro today, Aiur.

It is true he has played very inconsistent/very up and
down in many matches!!! He needs more consistency
but he has made 2 straight semis at Roland Garros
and quarters at the US Open!!!

Nadal may win again at the French Open but NOT every
single year like many of the "vamos brigade" foolishly
believe!!!

Nadal's health? Nadal's health before Roland Garros is
usually NOT an issue......only after Roland Garros!!! LOL
His so-called injuries mysteriously appear after Roland
Garros!!!

Thiem has won many matches on the clay in the last 2
seasons and I would put him as one of the favorites at
Roland Garros moving forward!!!

Why would Djokovic, Wawrinka, Federer, and Murray be
favored ahead of him? Thiem is younger than all of them
and his game is very effective on the clay thus the reason
he has achieved 2 straight semi-final appearances!!!

Del Potro would NOT do better than Thiem at the French
Open.......please do NOT make that wager Aiur because
you would certainly LOSE all your money!!!

I am afraid Aiur is living in the past by putting Djokovic,
Wawrinka, Federer, and Murray ahead of Domenic Thiem
at the French Open!!!Wake up Aiur the players you mentioned
are all in their 30's and should NOT be put ahead of Thiem at
Roland Garros moving forward!!!

Re: 2018 Aussie Open

Stan's last three trips to RG - F, SF, W

Novak has only failed to make the QF of RG twice going back to 2005.

I don't need to say anything about Federer. If he decides to play this year, I'll put him above Thiem.

Murray's last six trips to RG - SF, F, SF, SF, QF, SF.

Aside from being very consistent, another reason why I put these guys above Thiem is because they've actually won a major. They know what it takes.

As for age, have you been watching tennis at all? Nadal and Federer won everything last year. Stan started playing his best tennis in his late-20's and he's continued that into his early-30's. I expect Murray and Djokovic to come back completely refreshed, a la Federer and Nadal last year. The game has changed. You should know. 30 is the new 25.

Murray may need surgery - Lets hope not...!!!

But to Sneaky's point - The top four are running out of "Thiem"

Aiur......you are obviously living in the past!!! LOL

I know those 4 have excellent results at Roland Garros but they
will NOT continue to achieve those positive results!!!

You sound like you listen too much to the tv commentators/propaganda
machine of salesmanship!!! 30 is NOT the new 25!!! LOL

The tour is designed to make it easier for the top players to be successful
their is no magical trend of players aging better today!!!

I mean come on....the marquee players play mostly night matches with a
32-seed format and less events than top players in the 70s, 80s, and 90s!!!
The above reasons are obviously the reasons they seem to be aging with
better results!!! LOL

Stop living in the past Aiur.......Stop listening/believing the media propaganda
salesmanship!!! I think social media/tv commentator salesmanship brainwashes
too many fans allowing them to believe in nonsense!!!

Re: 2018 Aussie Open

Take off the tinfoil hat. Federer won two majors, three Masters 1000 and two ATP 500 events last season. He played Montreal and the US Open with a hurt back. Made it to the finals of Montreal and QF of the US Open.

Nadal won two majors, two Masters 1000 and two ATP 500 last season.

As for the season, hard courts have become the standard surface. Hard court tennis is absolutely brutal. The surface, combined with the overall shift from serve and volley to baseline tennis, means more injuries. You can't have guys playing 100+ matches a year and legitimately expect them to last more than a few seasons. If you don't like tennis anymore, don't watch. It's that simple. I'm sure you can find croquet on some channel.

Re: 2018 Aussie Open

You must be a very young and naive fan of tennis, Aiur.

The top players of the 70s,80s, and 90s played in very
challenging conditions compared with the way the ATP
spoonfeeds the marquee players today with easier
matches to mislead/trick the fans into believing
that todays top players are the "golden age of tenns!!! LOL

The ATP Tour is designed to create success for the marquee
players (top players) by having them play less and in favorable
conditions (night matches, 32-seed format)!!!

If you do NOT believe me just do some research!!! You will find
higher total matches per season for the top players in the 70s,
80s, and 90s and they played in a 8 seed and 16 seed format
in the horrible stifling heat playing 5 or 6 straight weeks at a time
without a break at times!!!

Come on Aiur.........prior to the 2017 season the ATP Tour was stale and
had been losing fan interest for about 2 years since 2015 with Djokovic
and Murray putting the fans to sleep!!! Federer and Nadal winning 2
majors each in 2017 is a direct result of the ATP TOUR having gone
stale for at least 2 years!!! Obviously.........having both Federer and
Nadal win in 2017 generated huge interest and resurrected an ATP
TOUR that was going stale and losing fan interest!!! As a 30+ year
fan of tennis I can honestly state that having Federer and Nadal win
so much in 2017 was very susupicious especially with the absence of
the unappealing Djokovic and Murray for a portion of the season!!!

Before you give these marquee players sooo much credit just ask
yourself Aiur if they really deserve it!!! The sponsors IMHO bought Tennis
with all their wealth and will simply do anything to create interest
and fool/trick/deceive the naive gullible young fans through social
media/ tv commentator propaganda shit!!!!

Re: 2018 Aussie Open

Ahhhhh......One day you all will believe my observations they do indeed
have merit!!!

You see the sport got too successful for its own good IMO.......oh lets say
since 2003-2005 when the ATP started turning tennis into a perfectly
scripted tv show!!!

Around that time (2003-2005) the ATP managed to increase the total # of
fans globally!!! The ATP market/sell the marquee players much better than
the 70s, 80s, and 90s with the power of social media!!! They use slick promos,
tv commentator promotion, endless interviews (on-court and off-court), endless
storylines/endless statistics they never used to use to sell tennis to the new
young generation of naive gullible fans!!!

I do NOT wear a tin foil hat......you are getting the keen observation of a 30+ year
fan of tennis!!! It sometimes embarrasses me to see the way the sport is run to
brainwash the fans with social media nonsense/innuendo!!! The fans get caught up
in the innuendo of so-called player injuries/comments made in interviews and
the endless statistics!!! In past eras we got to hear real commentary on the players
strokes, analysis of the game minus the endless promotion of the marquee players
and statistical bullshit!!!

To be blunt the sport of tennis has turned into a well-written television show with
thought provoking storylines but very little insight into the nuances of stroke
production, game analysis,and stroke analysis!!!

The ATP has turned into a very slick well-promoted, well publicized, mish mash of
inundating the fans with storylines, endless nonsensical top player interviews and
very little substance (real game analysis/stroke analysis and commentating without
promoting the marquee players)!!!

The fans are getting tricked Murreee.......Federer is a great player but IMO the 2017
season looks very suspicious with two very popular players splitting the 4 majors!!!
You see 2017 occurred because Tennis got as stale as a very dry piece of bread in
the previous 2 years with Djokovic and Murray winning and putting the fans to sleep!!! LOL

I blame the ATP greed and social media for turning tennis into a watered down well-promoted
mess of superficial nonsense!!! The sponsors bought tennis with their enormous wealth and
promote/sell/market tennis to the masses globally with very clever BULLSHIT to keep the fans
watching!!! QUOTED FOR TRUTH!!!

I am immune to salesmanship/promotion and do NOT buy the

The "marquee players" are invested up to their eyeballs in Tennis
thus the reason they are being paid so much to be players in a

understanding of the power of marketing/selling/advertising/

Re: 2018 Aussie Open

You guys know that we've explained to Sneaky dozens of times what "evidence" and "speculation" are and it's made no difference to him.  We've also explained why his nutjob conspiracy theories are terrible, ruin the sport, and make our passion pointless, and he still doesn't care.  He's not going to stop, so it's best to just let him talk and move on when he gets like this.

When he's actually talking real tennis, though, he's pretty cool and smart.  And a great fantasy competitor, too.

Re: 2018 Aussie Open

There is no way to fake a 140 mph serve down the tee or wide off the court... Can't fake running down the returns either... The players are getting better and the competition pool is deeper...

I love the old skool tennis just like you do Sneaky - Big Mac fan - Connors Mac Borg matches are what drew me into the sport... So much respect..!!!

But dissing on the current champions is just wrong...

ps: I hope you arn't buying into the "flat earth theory" - Your propensity for conspiracy is concerning....

Re: 2018 Aussie Open

I am NOT taking a jab at any of the fans on this forum but I
am taking a jab at the sport of tennis!!!

Well, we have discussed this before and we obviously have
opposing views!!! However, if you take a non prejudiced
look at the past it is obvious my observations have merit.

Commentators used to discuss nuances of the game, stroke
analysis, and training!!! Nowadays it is all promotion/advertising/
marketing of what used to be a wonderful sport!!!

I find it insulting when the ATP use social media to sell the fans
BS to keep fans interested and watering down the sport with
innuendo/superficial nonsense/too many stats/neverending
top player interviews/ and slick promos!!!

Oh well.....I guess I will NEVER be able to get you all to see the
stark contrast between the climate of the ATP tour in the 70s,80s,
and 90s compared with today!!!! In the past we witnessed a real
competitive ATP tour that fostered genuine competition minus the
BS nonsense of today (slick promos/endless marquee player interviews/
innuendos/ non-stop commentators hyping the marquee players!!!

Even though we do NOT agree on everything I enjoy all the posts of
the fans on this forum!!!

I appreciate the kind words Arvis regarding my knowledge of the sport
and my presence in the GSFT competitions!!! HA HA HA.......I just love
your sense of humor Arvis!!! LOL........I almost died laughing at your
quip about me changing my username to "TinFoil Hat." LMAO
That is definitely funny as hell Arvis you have a great sense of humor, Arvis!!!

Re: 2018 Aussie Open

Commentators don't do any sort of stroke analysis? Are you blind? I can't count how many times I've seen Nadal's trademarked "buggy whip" forehand broken down by commentators, showing the trajectory, RPM's of the shot, etc. Or the amount of times Federer's service motion has been dissected. There are also dedicated shows on networks like The Tennis Channel that breakdown the shots of pro players.

As for the ATP, it's a business. Businesses exist to make money. Look at the prize money dished out these days. There's a lot of money on the line. It allows fringe players who might only really be competitive in 250 events to play full-time. In the 70's, a guy like Denis Istomin would've been bounced out of the game early because he's not a perennial threat to win a big tournament. But since he can make a living playing in smaller events and on the challenger tour, we get to see him beat Djokovic at the Aussie Open. The money also trickles down into academies and whatnot.

You need to seriously get with the times. It's not 1980 anymore. Social media is huge and if a company doesn't use it, they are hurting themselves. The promo stuff like Federer playing Nadal on a half clay, half grass court, on a boat, or on a very tall building is called promotion. They're trying to bring new people to the game. No people=no money. No money=no tennis.

Re: 2018 Aussie Open

Mr. Aiur sounds like an advocate for the ATP Tour!!!

Be honest Aiur........nowadays when you turn on a
a tennis match there is very little analysis if any and
plenty of neverending hype promotion of the marquee players!!!

Denis Istomin is a good journeyman player but I sometimes
wonder if it is worth it for him financially to even play tennis!!!
I mean is all his sacrifice in training/travel and very little winning
of matches and money worth all the aggravation!!! Istomin would
very likely do better in a solid career that paid well that did NOT
involve so much travel and aggravation!!! There are many good
journeymen players but I sometimes wonder if all their sacrifice is
worth what they get paid after all their expenses!!!

Social media is very impressive to reach the masses and promote
a huge global sport like tennis!!! However, it is also used to manipulate
fans globally with hyperbole, innuendo, and endless promotion of the
"marquee players." HA HA....sometimes I think if NOT for the Federer/Nadal
rivalry cleverly made up by the ATP honchos.........there would be less fans!!
The TRUTH IMHO is that many if NOT most fans watch Tennis because of the
rivalries/goat debates and NOT for the enjoyment of the actual sport!!!
The TRUTH is the ATP marketing people are well aware that many fans
enjoy statistics (ie head to head, titles wons, etc) so much that it is used
to exploit the many naive fans of today!!! I applaud the ATP heads of marketing
in going inside the mind of the average fan and manipulating them with stats,
innuendo, promoting/marketing/branding of the marquee players to sell tennis
in the last 15 years thus creating a huge global audience but also sadly hurting
what was once a great sport in the 70s, 80s, and 90s!!!

You miss the point Aiur.......nowadays we can NOT watch tennis or anything
else without be sold an idea, storyline, statistics, and hype!!! In the past, we
the fans watched a real sport without being sold storylines, statistics, and
hype!!! It is a shame that you can NOT see the evolution or shall I say the
regression of Tennis!!! I am simply stating that nowadays fans are being
sold rivalries, statistics, innuendo, neverending marquee player hype!!!
Sadly NOT everything improves with time.........In the past the fans would
watch tennis for the actual sport.......you know the stroke analysis, nuances
of the game, and of course the actual matches minus the neverending
embarrassing marketing/selling of the "marquee players."
