Topic: 2017 YODA CUP & GURU RACE!!

Intrepid fantasy tennis reporter "DARTH NEWS" takes a look back at the 2017 Australian Open Yoda Cup & the Yoda Cup Guru Race at the conclusion of the Australian Open in Melbourne last month.

DRAGAN WINS A RECORD SIXTH YODA CUP TITLE IN MELBOURNE AND THEN RETIRES

The first Grand Slam event of the season in Melbourne, Australia is now behind us and it was Dragan, the current Yoda Cup Guru from Serbia, who was crowned the 2017 Australian Open Yoda Cup champion, the Serb from Bela Crkva won a record sixth individual Yoda Cup title and a career high fourth individual AO Yoda Cup title in the process, it was also Dragan’s third AO Yoda Cup victory in a row but he certainly had to work for it as he ended up equal on points with MikeTM732 on 1608pts, however Dragan edged out his American opponent by just one set overall, Dragan’s Yoda team earned 146 sets overall to Mike’s 145 to hand the Serb yet another victory in Yoda, the big news of the event however was that after Dragan completed his win the six-time Yoda Cup champ decided to pull the pin on his Yoda career and retire, it remains to be seen whether this is a temporary decision from the Serb but it does appear that he has finished his Yoda career in style, MikeTM732 enjoyed a great tournament finishing as runner up while Adunar ended close up in third place on 1536pts, the man from Geneva in Switzerland ended the event 72pts behind Dragan and Mike, with Dragan’s sudden withdrawal from Yoda MikeTM732 is now in pole position in the season long Guru race with three Grand Slam events still remaining!!

2017 AUSTRALIAN OPEN YODA CUP & GURU RACE

DRAGAN made the best start possible to the new season in 2017 by claiming his sixth individual Yoda Cup competition and his fourth career Australian Open Yoda Cup championship and third in succession, the current Yoda Cup Guru edged out MikeTM732 by just one set overall to sneak the closest of victories, the key for Dragan was his solid women’s team although if Mike had chosen Roger Federer to beat Stan Wawrinka in the men’s semi-final match pick then I could be writing about a different champion instead perhaps, Mike couldn’t beat Dragan heading into the final match of the tournament but Serena Williams winning a record seventh Australian Open certainly helped both Dragan and Mike as both competitors had her as their pre-tourney winner along with plenty of others, nobody had Federer as their pre-tourney winner which meant a straight out match pick occurred in the final match of the tournament, Dragan finished on 1608pts at the Australian Open in Melbourne which would have put him in the driver’s seat at the start of the new Yoda Cup Guru season, however the current Guru announced his retirement and withdrew from Yoda Cup competition immediately after his victory in Melbourne, for now Dragan does still sit in 1ST place in the season race to be the 2018 Guru but it remains to be seen whether he will come out of retirement and compete in the French Open at Roland Garros, Dragan is currently equal on points with MikeTM732 but leads by just one set overall, time will tell whether we see the current Guru and six-time Yoda Cup champ compete again but if he doesn’t he has certainly gone out on top.

MIKETM732 almost grabbed his second career Yoda Cup title but the man from New Jersey in the USA couldn’t quite seal the deal in the end, ending up one agonising set away from victory, Mike will be rueing his decision to pick Wawrinka over Federer in the semi-final match pick as a Fed pick would have given him a shot at Yoda Cup glory in the final match of the tournament, the best Mike could do in the final match pick was draw level with Dragan but the Serb had him beaten on sets, however it was still a great tournament for the American in Melbourne, MikeTM732 currently sits in 2ND place overall on 1608pts, the man from New Jersey will now be looking forward to Roland Garros hoping that he can put in another strong performance to maintain his consistency in 2017, another strong finish in Paris will have the American right up near the top of the leaderboard, MikeTM732 currently trails Dragan by just one set overall and holds a lead of just 72pts over Adunar in third spot.

ADUNAR produced a great first up result at the Australian Open in Melbourne, finishing a close up third on 1536pts which sees the man from Geneva in Switzerland sitting in 3RD place overall in the Guru race, Adunar chose eventual winner Williams as his women’s winner pre-tourney and that along with some solid match picks from the fourth round onwards propelled the Swiss to a top three finish, Adunar currenty sits 72pts behind Dragan in the top spot and holds a small lead of just 16pts over Original Zygote in fourth spot.

ORIGINAL ZYGOTE finished up in 4TH place overall and secured a total points haul of 1520pts in Melbourne, the man from Virginia in the USA will be very pleased with his start as he is handily placed heading into the French Open at Roland Garros, OZ is still well in contention for Guru honours after his fine effort in Melbourne, the American is only 88pts behind Dragan in first place and he will be hoping for another good showing in Paris to stay in the hunt and put pressure on those above him, Original Zygote is currently just 8pts ahead of Dwightcharles in fifth spot.

DWIGHTCHARLES enjoyed a solid start to his 2017 Yoda Cup campaign in Australia finishing in 5TH place overall in Melbourne with a total of 1512pts, the Canadian would have been pleased with a top five finish at the Australian Open and he will be looking to back that effort up with another good performance in Paris at the French Open, Dwightcharles currently sits 96pts behind the leader and holds a slim lead of 16pts over Charles in sixth spot.

CHARLES wasn’t too far off the pace in the Australian Open Yoda Cup competition in Melbourne, the GSFT administrator produced a solid effort to finish to end up in 6TH spot on 1496pts, the man from New York in the USA will be keen for an even better performance at Roland Garros so he can maintain his charge in the Guru race this season, Charles is currently 112pts behind Dragan in the top spot and holds a lead of just 24pts over Dtrain in seventh spot.

DTRAIN was there or thereabouts in Melbourne eventually finishing on 1472pts in 7TH place overall, the man from Missouri in the USA will be looking for an even higher finish at Roland Garros in late May to try and close the gap on the early Guru race front-runners, Dtrain is currently 136pts behind Dragan in first place and is 16pts in front of HundredTennisStats who sits in eighth spot.

HUNDREDTENNISSTATS enjoyed a reasonable showing at the first Grand Slam event of the season in Melbourne with the man from Oslo in Norway finishing up in 8TH place overall securing 1456pts in the process, HTS finds himself 152pts behind the leader Dragan and the Swedish born Norwegian resident will be looking for a strong performance at Roland Garros in late May to continue his rise up the leaderboard, HundredTennisStats is currently 24pts ahead of Edu_Anackin in ninth place.

EDU_ANACKIN produced a satisfactory start to his Yoda season but things would have been even better for the Brazilian if he had chosen Serena as his pre-tourney winner instead of Angelique Kerber, the man from Curitiba in Parana, Brazil did well to end up in 9TH place overall, Edu ended up with 1432pts which was good enough to see him sitting in the middle of the leaderboard, the man from Brazil currently sits 176pts out of first place and will be hoping for a little more luck to go his way in Paris, Edu_Anackin holds a current margin of 16pts over Tennis Elbow in tenth spot.

TENNIS ELBOW couldn't lift himself from the middle of the table in Melbourne with the Englishman ending up in 10TH place overall on 1416pts, TE is currently 192pts behind the leader and he will be hoping for a better performance at the French Open in Paris to push his claims further in the Guru race this season, Tennis Elbow is currently equal with Wimbledonut in eleventh spot but ahead by six sets overall.

WIMBLEDONUT would have been slightly disappointed with his Australian Open Yoda Cup effort, the 2016 Yoda Cup Guru didn’t produce the type of performance he would have been looking for at the first Grand Slam of 2017 by finishing on 1416pts, that result saw the American end up in 11TH place overall, Wimbo will be hoping for a much higher finish at Roland Garros in May to move his way up the leaderboard in the Guru race, Wimbledonut is currently 192pts out of the top spot and will need a strong showing in Paris to press his claims further in the season Guru race, he currently leads CrossCourt in twelfth spot by just 24pts.

CROSSCOURT was another Yoda Cup competitor who will be looking for an improved showing after his home town result in Melbourne, the man from Victoria in Australia suffered early with three minus sixteen first round results but did well to claw his way back up the leaderboard as the tournament progressed, CrossCourt eventually ended up in 12TH spot overall on 1392pts, CC will be keen for a top three finish at the French Open in order to stay in the hunt for Guru honours, CrossCourt sits 216pts behind Dragan in first place and is currently 40pts ahead of tenedab in thirteenth spot.

TENEDAB was hoping to begin his Yoda Cup career in style but the man from Florida in the USA won’t remember his debut performance in Yoda all that fondly, tenedab suffered from not having either Wawrinka or Nadal on his men’s team and the American eventually ended up on 1352pts in 13TH place overall, tenedab will now be keen to rebound quickly at Roland Garros in May so he can put himself back in contention for Guru honours, tenedab currently sits 256pts out of first place and is equal on points with Backhandpass in fourteenth spot but ahead by twelve sets.

BACKHANDPASS was another Yoda competitor who experienced three minus sixteen’s in the first round of competition , the Wisconsin resident would have been disappointed to start so poorly in Melbourne but he did well to lift himself up the leaderboard late in the tournament, the American didn't enjoy the best of starts this season as he finished with 1352pts in 14TH place overall, BHP will be extra keen to improve quickly in Paris so he can get back into the Guru race, Backhandpass currently sits 256pts behind Dragan in the top spot and is currently 32pts in front of Snollygoster in fifteenth place.

SNOLLYGOSTER was yet another Yoda Cup competitor who didn't start the Yoda season as well as he would have liked, the man from Melbourne in Australia would have been hoping for a stronger performance at his home Grand Slam but it never eventuated, Snollygoster finished up on 1320pts in 15TH place overall, the Australian will be looking for a much improved finish in Paris at Roland Garros to enhance his claims in the Guru race this season, Snolly currently sits 288pts out of first place and is just 8pts ahead of Arvis in sixteenth spot.

ARVIS was another who would have been very disappointed with his first up Yoda Cup effort in 2017, the self proclaimed Icelander from Florida in the USA was hoping for a strong start to his campaign this season but things never went his way in Melbourne, Arvis ended up on 1312pts in 16TH place overall and he is another Yoda Crew member who will be looking for much improvement at the French Open in late May, Arvis currently sits 296pts out of first place and is 32pts in front of Tono in seventeenth spot.

TONO was yet another Yoda Crew member who would have been very disappointed with his first up effort in 2017, the man from Palmerston North in New Zealand produced his worst ever performance in Melbourne with things not going to plan for the former Guru, Tono ended up on 1280pts in 17TH place overall and he will need to improve quickly at the French Open in Paris if he is to stay in the Guru race this season, Tono currently sits 328pts out of first place and holds a slender 24pt lead over Drivers in eighteenth spot.

DRIVERS would have also been extremely disappointed with her AO 2017 effort in the Yoda Cup at Melbourne Park in Australia, the British woman experienced three minus sixteen first round losses and eventually ended up well down the table in Melbourne, Drivers finished up on 1256pts in 18TH place overall and she is another Yoda Crew member who will need a much better result at the French Open if she is to resurrect her Guru chances, Drivers currently sits 352pts behind Dragan in first place and is 128pts ahead of spotec in nineteenth spot.

SPOTEC had a less than memorable start to his 2017 Yoda Cup season with the German competitor ending up in a lowly 19TH place overall on 1128pts in Melbourne, spotec will need to show a big improvement at Roland Garros to have any hope of remaining in the Guru race this season, spotec currently sits a massive 480pts out of first place and leads Johnny_Incognito in twentieth spot by just 112pts.

JOHNNY_INCOGNITO will want to quickly put the Australian Open Yoda Cup competition behind him after he finished up with a very disappointing 1016pts, that points haul saw the self proclaimed Icelander finish in the dreaded "Wooden Spoon" position in 20TH place overall, Johnny will be hoping for a total form reversal in time for Roland Garros to try and stake his claim for a Yoda Cup victory, his hopes in the Guru race for this season look to be gone unless something remarkable happens in Paris, Johnny_Incognito currently sits a whopping 592pts behind Dragan in the top spot.

With 592pts separating first from last place in this season’s Yoda Cup Guru race, some Yoda competitors may already be out of contention in the hunt for Guru honours, the battle for Yoda supremacy will continue in Paris on the red clay of Roland Garros, plenty of Yoda Cup competitors are still in with a shot for Guru honours in 2018 and I will be there to report on all the twists and turns of the exciting 2017 Yoda Cup & Yoda Cup Guru Race.
