Cecchinato Surprise Packet of RG 2018

Jun 5, 2018

The French Open at Roland Garros is infamous for producing surprise names going deep in the respective men’s and women’s singles draw each year, the 2018 version of RG is continuing that trend with the unseeded world No.72 Marco Cecchinato reaching the last four in a Grand Slam for the first time ever, in fact prior to the 2018 Roland Garros tournament commencing, the 25 year old Italian was 0 from 4 at his previous attempts in major events.

Cecchinato shocked former world No.1 Novak Djokovic in four sets to make his way into the semi-finals in Paris and he will now take on the Austrian clay court specialist Dominic Thiem for an unprecedented shot at a Grand Slam final, Cecchinato might well be dreaming about following in the footsteps of the unseeded Argentine Gaston Gaudio who won the title in 2004 over his compatriot Guillermo Coria in five sets, however with Thiem and the likelihood of Rafael Nadal still in the draw though, that prospect still seems a long way off.

It was only last year that we saw Jelena Ostapenko win the women’s championship as an unseeded player, that title was Ostapenko’s first ever tournament win at the time, the French Open certainly continues to spring the surprises on us when it comes to the world of tennis, there have been surprises among the women’s draw again this year too, particularly in the bottom half of the draw, however nothing of the same magnitude as Ostapenko’s magic run in 2017.

In the men’s singles however, if Cecchinato was to continue his dream run in Paris then he would send shockwaves around the sporting world, especially if Rafa, the King of Clay, ends up being dethroned on his favourite surface, we are getting down to the business end of Roland Garros 2018 and maybe, just maybe there might be a few more surprises in store for us tennis fans yet.
