Federer & Wozniacki All Smiles In Melbourne

Jan 29, 2018

The 2018 Australian Open in Melbourne produced another enthralling fortnight of exciting Grand Slam tennis, but when the curtain came down on the hot and happy Slam and the crowds were finished cheering, it was Roger Federer and Caroline Wozniacki who were left smiling and holding the silverware in the respective men’s and women’s singles championships.

World men’s No.2 Federer added his 20th Grand Slam title to an already bulging trophy cabinet by defeating Marin Cilic in five sets, while newly crowned world No.1 Wozniacki couldn’t stop smiling after winning her very first major championship on Rod Laver Arena against Simona Halep, Federer’s joy also produced tears when making his acceptance speech as the 20-time major champ was overcome with emotion at what he had just achieved, Wozniacki also shed tears of joy when she outlasted Halep in a tremendous three-set women’s singles final, the Dane finally capturing the major title that has alluded her all these years.

Although all tennis fans were gaga over another great Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne, AO 2018 will also be remembered for the brutal heat that most players had to endure throughout the fortnight, watching some of the best names in the game struggling in the heat certainly wasn’t fun or exciting and the Australian Open organisers will no doubt be discussing the best solution for all concerned before next year’s tournament, hopefully they can come up with a new heat policy that is fair and reasonable to all players.

The first Grand Slam event of 2018 was another great success with record crowds attending the tournament once again, one wonders what the final crowd figure would have been without some of those extremely hot days though, the tennis was once again of a high calibre and there were many storylines throughout the two weeks to keep all tennis fans interested, fans of Fed and Woz were certainly left celebrating and smiling as their heroes came out on top in Melbourne, however nobody would have been smiling more than the two respective AO singles champs themselves.
