Can A New Major Champion Emerge In New York?

The 2016 US Open is now underway and all tennis fans will be looking forward to plenty of exciting and drama filled tennis over the next two weeks in New York, will we see the usual names emerge once again at a Grand Slam event or will we see the emergence of a new Grand Slam champion at Flushing Meadows in New York?

Most pundits are tipping the usual contenders once again, the likes of Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray among the men and Serena Williams, Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza among the women, however there is reason to believe that we can indeed see a new major champion emerge once again in either the men’s singles championship or the women’s singles championship in 2016.

New York has provided many first time Grand Slam singles champions in recent years, Marin Cilic (2014) and Juan Martin del Potro (2009) among the men and Flavia Pennetta (2015) and Samantha Stosur (2011) among the women, perhaps it is too soon to see another new first time Grand Slam champion emerge once again in New York, let’s take a look at the likely possibilities.

The top four seeds among the men (Djokovic, Murray, Stan Wawrinka & Rafael Nadal) have all won multiple Slams and they are the favoured quartet once again, only one other player (Cilic) among the remaining seeds has tasted Grand Slam success previously, so who out of the remaining seeded players is a possible maiden GS winner in 2016 then, perhaps previous major finalists Milos Raonic (No.5 seed) and Kei Nishikori more »
