Rafa And Serena Claim Tennis Royalty In Queens

Sep 14, 2013

The 2013 US Open is now over for another year and Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York has crowned it’s champions for another season, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams ended the championships as the respective King and Queen in New York and it’s hard to argue against the fact that both champions were deserved winners, Rafa played superbly throughout the tournament and when challenged strongly by Djokovic in the men’s final the Spaniard somehow found a way to overcome adversity to win his 13th Grand Slam title, Williams looked on course for a straight sets victory over Victoria Azarenka in the women’s final before the Belarusian bounced back to snatch the second set tiebreak, however Serena’s champion qualities came to the fore in the deciding set as the American powered her way through it to win her 17th Grand Slam singles title.

In an ironic twist, Rafa remains unbeaten on hard courts in season 2013 while Serena is still to be beaten on clay this year, both players were worthy champions in New York with both having to overcome injury problems throughout the last year or so, Rafa’s return to the tour this year has been remarkable and his domination on the North American hard courts has been the biggest talking point of the season so far, can the man from Mallorca now go on to claim his first ever ATP World Tour Finals title I wonder, and could he really do the unthinkable and catch up to Roger Federer’s haul of 17 GS titles? Serena has been the dominant figure on the women’s tour in 2013 and she now apparently has her sights set on breaking the great record of Margaret Court with 24 GS titles, I personally think that record may be out of reach for Williams but it may help to motivate Serena for another year or two.

As the tennis media attention now turns toward the Davis Cup and the year end race to become No.1, the four Grand Slam events will quickly move into the history books, history will show however that in the year 2013 Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams from the USA reigned supreme on centre court at Arthur Ashe Stadium, another great Grand Slam season has come to an end, see you all in Melbourne in 2014. :)
