Exciting US Open In Prospect

The 2013 US Tennis Open is almost upon us and this year’s edition promises to be one of the more exciting and intriguing Grand Slam tournaments for a variety of reasons, unlike many of the previous Grand Slam events where picking the men’s and women’s champion usually came down to only a couple of players, there seems to be an air of expect the unexpected as we approach the big fortnight extravaganza in Flushing Meadows, New York.

It was only a few months ago that most fans and tennis media alike were deciding between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray on who would be the men’s champion in New York in 2013, and on the women’s side the same group of people probably already had the letter S of defending women’s champion Serena Williams engraved on the trophy, my how things have changed, the hottest player on the men’s tour this year is clearly world No. 2 Rafael Nadal and although Williams has been the dominant figure this season on the women’s circuit, her loss last week in Cincinnati to world No. 2 Victoria Azarenka and the withdrawal of Russian superstar Maria Sharapova has certainly added some intrigue to the women’s championship.

Is it now a three-way go for the men’s US Open crown between Djokovic, Nadal and Murray or does making that statement disrespect the chances of former champions Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro, on the women’s side it appears to be a two-horse race between Williams and Azarenka but does stating that fact disrespect 2011 champion Sam more »
